Many homeowners are decking their interiors and exteriors with boughs of holly and other festive accoutrement—but how much is too much? Some homeowners say they’ve confronted their neighbors about what they consider to be “obnoxious” holiday decorations, according to a new survey by furniture retailer Joybird.
Those who live in the West are most likely—at 13 percent—to have a confrontation with neighbors over holiday decorations, compared to 8 percent in the Northeast and 6 percent each in the Midwest and South. What’s turning them into Scrooges? Different types of decor offend different generations. For example, 36 percent of baby boomers call giant, inflatable yard decorations “tacky,” compared to 27 percent of Generation Xers and 23 percent of millennials who agree. The younger generations were more likely to call inflatables “good,” “festive,” or “fun.”
The survey also revealed that most Americans prefer the ease of using a fake Christmas tree rather than a real one, 66 percent versus 32 percent, respectively. Most also prefer classic or modern holiday decorating styles, with baby boomers showing the most affinity.
